Information
Please ensure to always disinfect tools before using them. Same when using them midst surgery and going from wound to wound. Use iodine, saline, or diluted carbolic acid.
Suture Kit
Is used for closing up internal and external wounds. It consists of:
Fishbone shaped needle
- Used with catgut thread (external) or silk thread (internal)
- Catgut is made from twisted sheep and horse intestines
- Used for stitching/suturing up wounds
Scalpel
- Used for precise incisions or removal of skin excess
- Used for widening already existing wounds or making new, structured ones
- The heavier the scalpel the more sturdy it is
Spatula
- Flat metal spoon shaped instrument (use gently)
- Used for widening wounds or assisting in looking for debris/internal damage
Forceps
- handheld, scissor shaped instrument (dull)
- Used for grasping and holding objects
Surgical Scissors
These are metal scissors that are used for cutting stitches, threads, or removal of excess skin.
Surgical Clamps (Hemostat)
These are metal clamps that are used to cut off blood flow to Arteries/Veins or other fluids during surgery.
Intravenous Therapy
This is to administer fluids and certain medications to the patient.
- Consists of bag/bottle of saline
- Used in surgeries to combat blood loss
- Used in treatment for dehydration, after passing out from alcoholism, injuries, or illnesses
- Can mix certain medicine into IV depending on the need and situation during the surgery
- Important: Ensure no air to air bubbles are left in the line prior to set up
Metal Irrigation Tubes
These are metal tubes used to aid with drainage of different kinds of procedures. Come in many sizes and lengths.
Syringe
A small hollow tube used for injecting or withdrawing liquids. It may be attached to a hypodermic needle in order to extract fluid from the body or administer medications or vaccines. Comes in many sizes known as gauges.
Stethoscope
A tool used to amplify the sounds of the lungs and heart to assess better.
Tourniquet
A device, such as a strip of cloth or a band of rubber, that is wrapped tightly around a leg or an arm to prevent the flow of blood to the leg or the arm for a period of time. Mainly used when artery or vein damage is present. Especially used for amputations.
Bone-Related
Metal plates
These come in many shapes and sizes. Commonly used to reinforce bones along the fracture sites.
Bone file
A metal file used to shape or file down bone.
Charcoal Pencil
Used to make markings on the body before and during surgery. Non-toxic and soft enough to not damage any organs.
